The car rescue card: information and download

Modern vehicles have numerous safety systems that can save lives in the event of an accident. However, rescue workers pose great challenges for them. If occupants have to be cut out of the vehicle, it is often not clear where they can start with heavy equipment without putting the victims at additional risk. Airbags, for example, can deploy late. Some steel cables are also too hard to cut through with normal cutting tools. A rescue card in the car is a helper in an emergency. It shows rescue workers where it is safe to cut. This allows them to act faster and save valuable seconds.

What is the car rescue card?

The rescue card is a kind of instruction for rescue workers that provides information about the construction of a certain car model. It schematically shows where rescue-relevant components such as airbags, body reinforcements or batteries are located. Rescue workers can use the rescue card to see exactly where they can start with the cutting tool and where not. Accident victims can thus be rescued more quickly – and the faster a rescue is possible, the higher the chances of survival.

The rescue card for the car is available in the form of a small map or as an overview in DIN A4 format. Car manufacturers are obliged to create such an emergency card for each car model or model group. Since technically relevant details are marked separately in the view, rescue cards must always be available in colour. This is the only way they can display critical interfaces at a glance.

Why is a rescue card useful?

After an accident, every second counts for injured people. 60 minutes is considered the golden rule. Until then, injured people should receive medical care. In rural regions, where the nearest utilities are far away, this can be fatal for accident victims. This makes it all the more important that injured people are quickly freed from their vehicle. However, hidden power lines, airbags or high-strength body connections can endanger injured people and rescue workers. The rescue card for cars provides the helpers with the necessary information and helps to speed up the rescue process. In this way, it can even save lives in an emergency.

If the emergency card is not available, this costs valuable time in the rescue. Mobile rescue card apps, which provide vehicle data in an online database, are intended to provide additional support to fire departments. In the event of an accident, helpers can display the rescue cards for common vehicles on their smartphones. However, car drivers should not rely solely on the technical equipment of the fire brigades on site. It is better and safer to have the rescue card for your own car model on board.

Is the rescue card mandatory?

The rescue card for the car is voluntary. There is no obligation to carry it, which means that it must be present during the journey. Nevertheless, it makes sense. In this way, you can be rescued more quickly from an accident car. If medical help is necessary, it can be provided in a shorter time. In addition, the rescue card for the car makes the work of the emergency services on site easier. They can proceed more quickly and precisely and, if necessary, take appropriate precautions, such as deactivating the high-voltage system in an electric car.

Where does the rescue card belong in the car?

The rescue card has a fixed place in the car. It should always be stored behind the sun visor on the driver's side. This storage location is internationally standardized. In the event of an accident abroad, the emergency services on site also know where they can find the relevant document. An additional sticker on the edge of the windscreen signals that there is a rescue card in the vehicle. The sticker is stuck on the windshield at the top left or bottom outside the driver's field of vision.

Protected in an emergency: Four steps to your rescue card

Rescue cards can vary greatly from manufacturer to manufacturer, but also from model to model. It is therefore absolutely important to choose the right card for your own vehicle model. We'll show you how to get the right rescue card in four steps, place it correctly in the car and make its presence recognizable to others.

1. Choose the right rescue card

Rescue cards are generally available from car manufacturers. You can usually find the free data sheets online from the manufacturer. The appropriate links for the most popular models can be found further down in this article. Make sure that the type designation matches that of your car. While some manufacturers offer their own rescue cards for each vehicle type, others offer PDFs with several models for download. You first have to look for your own model. If you are not sure about the series, look in the vehicle registration document in field D.2.

2. Print out your rescue card

Once you have found the right rescue card, print it out on A4 in color. This is particularly important because components such as vehicle batteries, fuel tanks or control units are displayed in different colors. This is the only way to identify areas that require special caution at a glance.

3. Place the rescue card in the vehicle

Clamp the printed rescue card behind the sun visor on the driver's side. Most sun visors are already equipped with a loop, so this is easily possible. The emergency card can be removed there in the event of an accident.

4. In addition to the rescue card: Request and attach stickers

Whether there is a rescue card in the car is hardly recognizable without a corresponding indication. That's why there are stickers for the windshield in addition to the actual rescue card. They are available from the ADAC or from testing institutions such as TÜV SÜD and DEKRA, among others.

Rescue cards for download

Via the following links you can download the rescue cards for car models of the most popular manufacturers. If your car model is not listed, contact your car manufacturer. By the way: In addition to the term "rescue card", some manufacturers also use the terms "rescue data sheets" or "mission sheets".
